County Domestic/Sexual Assault Response Team
A
recent countywide partnership has been created in the Poweshiek County Area to further
combat Domestic and Sexual Violence. The
Domestic and Sexual Assault Response Team officially went into effect on September
17, 2003 . This group consists of members from the Grinnell
Police Department, the Brooklyn Police Department, Poweshiek County Sheriffs Office,
the Poweshiek County Attorneys Office, and the Poweshiek
County
s
Domestic Violence Alternatives/Sexual Assault Center.
The group became official when members representing these agencies signed a
statement of understanding outlining the responsibilities of each member and their agency.
The purpose or mission or this team is to further strengthen the network of
agencies and disciplines that respond to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault
and will provide a measured response to these victims.
This will include but will not be limited to:
assistance to victims during the court and trial phase of their ordeal
liaison to victims as they encounter and navigate the criminal justice system
a local review board of cases pertaining to domestic violence and sexual assault
that will allow for services to victims to be upgraded and improved.
Future goals of the team include: improving the training of those who are likely
to encounter victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, using media and technology
to improve the system so that victims are able obtain services and information, involving
yet even more professions and disciplines within this team, and increasing the knowledge and support of Poweshiek
County Area residents about the dynamics of and response to domestic violence or sexual
assault.
The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Team of Poweshiek County would like to
remind the community that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
